The state of Maine's covered bridges

I often don't go off topic on this blog, but this is an issue close to my heart: the state of Maine's covered bridges.

Maine has over 300 covered bridges throughout, most of them built in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It is estimated by the Bureau of State Historical Affairs that up to 70% of these bridges are in a state of "irreparable disrepair" and may require demolishing.

Maine's historical socities actively try to fund repair projects, but in recent years, those funds have dried up.

I drive through some of these bridges everyday, and what I'm seeing is really distressing: rotted-out wood, broken planks, paint chipping and in some cases, stability issues -- yes, the bridges are literally falling apart and unsafe.

What is the State of Maine doing about it? Not much. They don't want to talk about it or discuss it. That's why I'm here, using this blog to bring attention to it.
